We find money-saving and money-growing ideas from around the web for your everyday finances.

  • Price matching is where a store will match a lower advertised price from a rival retailer for the same product, so you get the product at the lower price (or better) without having to drive around town for the better deal. Now, thanks to HowtoSaveMoney.ca, you can easily access a summary of retailer price matching policies for many Canadian stores.
  • A reader of Lifehacker wanted to know, “What should I always buy generic?” So they provided a list of things you should try to buy generic (such as cleaning products), and things you mostly shouldn’t buy generic (such as paper products).
  • Why buy when you can borrow for free? Or even just get for free. Did you know that if you live in Toronto, you can get free passes to attractions such as the Toronto Zoo through the public library? Of course, there are limitations and conditions.
  • Need some ideas to help save more money or to get started on a savings path? Financial Post’s “summer school” has 22 savvy savings strategies to help you reach your goals.
  • Planning a trip soon? Do you know the best day to buy cheap airline tickets? Or what day to fly on? Or how early to book a flight? The article also mentions the Kayak website which has a “Price Trend” box that “tells you whether to buy or wait and Kayak’s confidence level based on whether prices are going up or down.”
